A quote/statement about what the Honors & Scholars Program has meant to you.

The Honors and Scholars program has been the edge that I have needed to reach opportunities that I would not otherwise have had, including unique events and activities, and study/research opportunities. Being a part of the program has brought me closer to my ambitions and goals beyond graduation by offering chances for students to participate in selective events, and placed me apart from competition in terms of hiring and applications.

A small group of students and I traveled to China for three weeks in the summer of 2016 to research the effect of tourism and corresponding pollution/foot traffic on several religious and world heritage sites, and the balance between worship and revenue from tourism. We additionally looked into related findings as we traveled. Members from our group have presented this research at the AsiaNetwork conference in Chicago during the Spring 2017 semester as well as the college's academic fair during the same semester.

Underappreciated & Unrecognized: The Little Known Contributions of Women to Science & Technology
“I was taught that the way of progress is neither swift nor easy” (Ignotofsky 29). The words of Marie Curie ring true for female scientists from the beginning of history, as they were deemed physically and mentally unequal when compared with their male counterparts. Although culturally, socially, and often religiously set up for failure, a few managed to overcome the slew of obstacles placed before them in their pursuit of scientific and technological knowledge. Perhaps the greatest obstacle was the denial of education and enrollment at higher learning institutions resulting from the male fear of educated women. The progress made in terms of gender equality has been great; however, a large gap remains today, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Despite the numerous educational and social barriers placed before them, women managed to make significant contributions to and have advanced science and technology throughout history in many, if not all, of the prominent civilizations across the globe.

Interactions observed within a herd of domestic horses (Equus caballus) when a newcomer is introduced
Equus caballus was domesticated around 3500 BCE, and have since been kept as free-ranging animals, often in herds with strict hierarchical relationships. The purpose of this research project was to study the behaviors within a herd with pre-existing relationships; to determine whether there might be an increase in the number of aggressive behaviors if a new gelding were to be introduced to the herd until a new hierarchy could be established.
