Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE) Requirement

The RVE has been aligned with the Virginia English Standards of Learning and the five key components of effective reading instruction:

  • phonics
  • phonemic awareness
  • vocabulary
  • comprehension
  • and fluency

Candidates must earn a minimum score of 157 in order to participate in student teaching. This test is required only for candidates who are seeking to be elementary teachers or special education teachers.

The RVE should be taken after candidates have completed EDUC 320 and EDUC 321. These courses provide the content knowledge that candidates need to know to be successful when they take the RVE.
