Meet Our Counselors
Bill Brown was hired as the Director of Student Counseling Services in August of 1999. Before coming to VWU, Bill spent eleven years providing psychotherapy services to adult clients at the City of Virginia Beach's Mental Health Center. Prior to settling in Virginia Beach, Bill worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings and held positions such as "Clinical Social Worker" at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, "Family Therapist" for another hospital's substance abuse and mental health units and "Outpatient Service Director" for the Mental Health Center in Danville, Virginia. He also ran his own private practice and acted as the clinical director for a group practice of substance abuse treatment providers. Bill completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology (not "Bloodsucking", as alleged by certain students) at Transylvania University, a small liberal arts college in Lexington, Kentucky, which is very similar in size to VWU. He received his MSW at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was licensed as a Clinical Social Worker in 1987.
Crista Gambrell was hired as the Assistant Director of Counseling Services in Fall of 2018. Before coming to VWU, Crista spent over ten years practicing as a licensed professional counselor in Coastal Virginia. Crista obtained her undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and both her Masters and Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education and Supervision at Regent University in Virginia Beach. Her counseling interests include mindfulness and self-care practices, exercise and eating concerns, and healthy relationships. Crista worked at Old Dominion University’s counseling center and enjoys mentoring and helping young adults navigate life issues. When she is not counseling she enjoys providing wellness education, going to the beach, and relaxing on the porch with friends.
