Annual Traditions

August

  • Marlin Days: New students arrive early to prepare for the upcoming semester and participate in community-building activities. 
  • Freshman Festival: Freshmen enjoy live music, novelty activities, and free food after move-in.
  • Casino Night: Freshmen play roulette, black jack, and other casino games while competing for fun prizes.
  • Glow Party: New students dance the night away under the glow of neon lights. Three dueling DJs provide the music. 

September

  • Club Fair: New and existing clubs recruit members for the upcoming year. 
  • Founders Day: A full day of activities celebrate the founding of Virginia Wesleyan University.
  • Mud Games: Teams compete in physical challenges in a mud pit.
  • Marlinstock: Students enjoy live music on Batten Lawn. 
  • Pub 'n Club: The first in a series of parties with a DJ, dancing, games, and food. 
  • Greek Recruitment: The first fraternity and sorority recruitment activities take place this month. 

October

  • Airband: Teams compete inlip sync performances that often include dancing, skits, and costumes. 
  • Chalk the 'Walk: Students create fun chalk drawings on the sidewalk between Batten Center and the Hofheimer Library.
  • Homecoming: Alumni are invited back to campus to participate in a weekend of events.
  • Homecoming Parade: Students, faculty/staff, and furry friends process on a short campus route (by foot or car). Participants often perform brief skits or routines in costume.
  • Homecoming Court: Students nominateHomecoming Court prince and princesses from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes. The top nominees are crowned King and Queen. 
  • Homecoming Dance: Students attend a dance with a DJ and photographer. Dress to impress!
  • Homecoming Tailgate: Students and alumni enjoy live music, games, food and drink on Trinder Field. The tailgate takes place during athletic events. 

November

  • Veterans Day: The campus hosts a ceremony to honor United States veterans.

December

  • Christmas Tree Lighting: Students, faculty, and staff sing carols, light candles, drink hot cocoa and cider before lighting the tree behind Godwin Hall.  The highlight is a rousing rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas. The ceremony celebrates the life of '76 graduate and Navy Seal Lt. Slator Clay Blackiston, III.
  • Underpants Run: Students don underwear and run around campus to blow off steam during exams.
  • Spa A La Marlin on Reading Day: Students can receive free massages and snacks before exams. 
  • Late Night Breakfast: Students enjoy bacon, eggs, biscuits, and more as a final treat before exams begin. Faculty and staff help cook and serve the food. 

January

  • Winter Homeless Shelter: Students, faculty/staff, and alumni volunteer to help manage an off-campus homeless shelter for a week. 
  • Club Fair: New and existing clubs recruit new members.

April

  • Spring Alumni Weekend: Alumni are invited back to VWU to participate in a weekend of events.
  • Seafood in the Dell: Students and alumni enjoy seafood and live music on Batten Lawn.
  • Spring Fling: Students enjoy live music, games, and food.
  • Water Wars: Students are treated to water slides, super soakers, and games on Batten Lawn.
  • The Bobbies: Student leaders and clubs are recognized for their achievements at the Bobbies, VWU's Student Leadership Awards

May

  • Spa A La Marlin on Reading Day: Students can receive free massages and snacks before exams. 
  • Late Night Breakfast: Students enjoy bacon, eggs, biscuits, and more as a final treat before exams begin. Faculty and staff help cook and serve the food. 
  • Senior Days: Graduating students participate in Wesleyan Wednesday at Shorebreak, Baccalaureate Services, a fun outing to a local venue, and Commencement.
