Programs and Projects
The Office of Gender and Sexuality Equity sponsors a wide array of programming, such as annual educational and social events for Women's History Month and International Women's Day, LGBTQ History Month, and Domestic Assault Awareness Month. The office also sponsors interactive workshops for Virginia Wesleyan students on topics such as career and interview prep, college sexuality and risky sexual behavior, sexual assault awareness, the role of women in politics and elections, and donation drives for women and children in need. In addition, it provides programming related to issues of diversity and inclusion, such as town hall discussions on reproductive justice and race, safe space training for faculty and staff, and open-to-the-public discussions on important gender issues, such as "Ask A Trans Person Panel," which was co-sponsored by Equality Virginia and VWU Spectrum. It was a unique opportunity to deepen one's understanding of the transgender community, hear from trans neighbors, and make new connections. The Office has also partnered with the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, the Robert Nusbaum Center, and Hofheimer Library, to offer training workshops for faculty and staff on issues such as unconscious bias and microaggressions. The Office of Gender and Sexuality Equity, formerly the Women's Resource Center, in conjunction with the Women's & Gender Studies Program and the Women's Forum, has also hosted the annual "Works in Progress" conference, a regional interdisciplinary conference of feminist scholarship, twice in recent years.
