Senior Composition Recital
|Course||MUS 480: Senior Project|
As I studied the works of the generation of composers which came before me, I began to realize that the domain of artistic sounds may very well have been explored to its limits. Being a composer existing in the post-serialism, post-minimalism, post-experimentalism (post-a-whole-lot-of-other-stuff-ism) era I felt faced with a serious question: just what is there left to do anyway? In my presentation, I will talk about what it means to be a 21st-century composer. Over the last few years, I have come to realize that perhaps it should not be the goal of the composer to create something new per se, but rather to create something important. I will present examples of two of my own works: a large scale piece, the Requiem in A Minor, and a small scale piece, the song Windows is Shutting Down. I will show how these fit in both a historical perspective as well as within what I deem as the goal of the 21st- century composer.
