During the Civil Rights Movement, Malcolm X, a black Muslim leader from New York City, caught the attention of the New York Amsterdam News. This newspaper portrayed Malcolm X as a leader for African Americans who sought equality. It used aggressive terms such as “powerful” and “strong” to make Malcolm X into a hero of the African-American community. It portrayed him as a leader even after his departure from the Nation of Islam. After Malcolm X’s death, the New York Amsterdam News made him into a martyr for African Americans.
