This project explores the role that baseball played in New York City culture during the 1920s. It specifically examines how The New York Times framed the New York Yankees to advocate the superiority of the city’s modernism. By examining The Times’ coverage of the Yankees-Giants rivalry, Babe Ruth, and Yankee Stadium, it argues that the newspaper portrayed the Yankees, Ruth, and Yankee Stadium as symbols of New York City’s modern culture. Showing how Ruth and Yankee Stadium symbolized the culture of New York City, this research illustrates the importance of baseball in American culture during the 1920s.
