Building the World: Intersections of 18th Century Class and Gender in S/he Stoops to Conquer

Abstract

In Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity Judith Butler states that there need not be a doer behind the deed, but that the doer is variably constructed in and through the deed. In other words gender is not innate in us but something that is constructed and thus can be performed. This was the lens in which She Stoops to Conquer was placed under. By doing so audience members witnessed what happens when gender becomes an element that characters put on. As the dramaturg for this production I will discuss my work with the company on intersections of class and gender with 18th century culture.
