On May 15, the Jane P. Batten Honors College recognized graduating seniors who completed the honors college requirements during a special Capstone Ceremony celebrating academic excellence, leadership, and scholarship.

President Scott D. Miller welcomed members of the Class of 2026 and praised their accomplishments and contributions to the University community.

“You have upheld—and exceeded—the standard of excellence envisioned at the program’s founding,” said President Miller. “This is a remarkable testament to your intellectual strength, work ethic, and academic commitment. Each of you now becomes a vital part of our institutional story. You join a tradition of excellence while simultaneously helping to shape its future during a transformational moment as we prepare to become Batten University on July 1.”

Dr. Miller also recognized Jane P. Batten and her late husband, Frank Batten Sr., for their transformational philanthropy and steadfast belief in the power of education, which has profoundly shaped the trajectory of the institution. He expressed gratitude for Mrs. Batten’s vision, leadership, and unwavering support.

Sarah Richards '26, who was selected by her classmates to deliver the keynote address, reflected on her years at Virginia Wesleyan and the experiences that shaped the graduating class.

“Over these past four years, we have grown tremendously,” said Richards. “We arrived as nervous—and sometimes overconfident—freshmen trying to figure out where we belonged. Today, we leave as researchers, athletes, leaders, creators, scholars, and professionals prepared to take on whatever comes next.”

She noted that the Batten Honors College provided more than academic opportunities—it fostered friendships, meaningful experiences, and a supportive community that challenged students to become the best versions of themselves.

“So, to the Batten Honors College Class of 2026, thank you for the memories, the laughter, the support, and the countless moments that made these four years unforgettable,” Richards said.

Dean of the Batten Honors College Dr. Travis Malone recognized the winner and finalists of the Ryan Environmental Prize for Excellence in Research. Tyler Noll received the top honor, while Stephanie Clark, Jasmine Gorney, and Lily Reslink were recognized as finalists. Elena Lichtenwalner received the Audience Award.

Provost and Vice President Deirdre Gonsalves-Jackson presented the Frank and Jane P. Batten Scholar Award to a distinguished faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching and mentoring. Professor of Education Dr. William McConnell was recognized as the recipient of the prestigious honor.

All graduates received Batten Honors College medallions to wear during Commencement. The medallions symbolize both the graduates’ academic achievements and their membership in the distinguished community of Batten Honors scholars.

“Congratulations on reaching this extraordinary day,” said President Miller. “We wish you continued success, and we hope you will remain connected to your alma mater as your journey unfolds.”

The ceremony was livestreamed and is archived on the VWU Digital Broadcasting Network.
