A Family Affair
For the Harris family, Virginia Wesleyan is more than a school—it’s home

When Betsy Harris walks across the stage to receive her diploma at Virginia Wesleyan University's Commencement this Saturday, she won't just be celebrating her own academic achievement—she'll be continuing a proud family tradition.
A political science major with plans to pursue a master's degree and a career with the Department of Homeland Security, Betsy is the third of five siblings in a blended family that has made VWU a second home. Her stepmother, Lori Harris, serves as Executive Assistant to VWU President Scott D. Miller and graduated from the University in 1994. Betsy's father, Joe Harris—also Class of '94—played on the men's basketball team during his time at Wesleyan. Now, decades later, their children have followed in their footsteps.
"I grew up running around the hallways not really knowing what went on in all those rooms," Betsy recalls with a laugh. "I'm still running around those hallways, but I am doing so with a purpose!"
Though Betsy began her college journey at Randolph-Macon, she says it didn't take long to realize where she truly belonged. "This school has meant so much to my family," she says. "VWU is the place I chose to stay. We have so much pride in this place. I hope my children attend here as well so we can keep this going!"
The Harris family story is a living testament to the bonds forged both at home and on campus. Two of Betsy's older siblings have already graduated from VWU, and two younger brothers are currently enrolled. That shared experience brings an added layer of connection to their college years.
"There's definitely nothing better than getting out of class and running into one of your brothers," Betsy says. "It's even more fun to have classes together. We get a little competitive to see who gets the best grades, but we are always there to help each other out."
Lori Harris sees it as a natural evolution of the values her family holds dear. "The kids grew up seeing us as active alumni, seeing the kinds of relationships we built, and the value we have received from these bonds," she says. "I think they saw that Virginia Wesleyan is an extended part of our family, and I think that's what they found so appealing. When any of us are on campus, we feel like we are home."
And as Betsy prepares to move on to the next chapter of her life, Lori reflects on the moment with deep pride.
"I'm over the moon," she says. "I am so happy for her. When you see them reach a life milestone, it gives you goosebumps. There are many life milestones, but this is a big one!"
For the Harris family, Virginia Wesleyan isn't just a college—it's a legacy. A place where family, tradition, and purpose intersect. A place that feels like home.
