Earn a Master of Arts in Education at VWU

Virginia Wesleyan's Teacher Education Program to add a fifth year of study

News Release | February 14, 2018

Beginning in summer 2018, Virginia Wesleyan University will offer a Master of Arts in Education  (MAEd) Program that leads to eligibility to teach in one of 13 secondary 6-12 or pre-K-12 endorsement areas.

In an effort to build on the advantages of Virginia Wesleyan’s unique 4x4 undergraduate curriculum (four courses per semester, each worth four academic credits), the MAEd program is designed as a 4+1 route (four years undergraduate study, plus one year graduate study) to initial licensure in Virginia. This accelerated program will enable Virginia Wesleyan students to earn both a baccalaureate and master’s degree in only five years, instead of the five and a half or six years required to complete most MAEd programs.

According to Malcolm Lively, VWU Associate Professor of Education and Director of the Education Program, "Students who know they want to be teachers as freshmen or sophomores, and those who make that decision as late as the beginning of their senior year, will complete graduation requirements and major coursework in one of the approved secondary or preK-12 disciplines, earn their bachelor’s degree, then matriculate as teacher candidates into the MAEd Program to complete a set sequence of internship-based professional studies courses and required field experiences."

The program is set to begin this summer with students representing a variety of content areas, including art, music, history and English.
