For the second consecutive year, Virginia Wesleyan College has been named to G.I. Jobs magazine's list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military and veterans as students.
For the project, more than 7,000 schools nationwide were polled. Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.
Specifically, Virginia Wesleyan was recognized for assisting military students one on one to help with certification paperwork, registration and other financial and enrollment options.
Married Navy veterans Tyrus and Ebony Johnson ’13 said that “coming to Virginia Wesleyan was a smooth process.” They credit Tanya W. Oliver, Senior Associate Director of Admissions and VA Certifying Official for Virginia Wesleyan, for assisting them with the necessary paperwork and giving them step-by-step support.
“Tanya helped us out a lot and I was on the phone with her at least two times a week,” said Ebony. “We couldn’t have done it without her.”
Virginia Wesleyan was also praised for offering military students flexibility, support and financial benefits. Students enjoy day, evening and weekend classes, personalized attention from veteran counselors on staff, and benefits through the College’s participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program.
“This list is especially important now because the Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher. “Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated. The Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted friend.”
