Grad Gets Ahead with Career 15

This unique program connects Virginia Wesleyan students with top-tier corporations seeking full-time and part-time employment and internship opportunities.

altThanks to a program called Career 15, Zac Green ’09 landed a full-time job with a top-tier corporation just one month after graduation.

Green, who majored in business, accepted a position with Verizon Wireless and entered the Retail Management Training Program in June 2009.  This two-year training program allows Green to learn various career paths within the company including customer service, sales, retail and more.

“Students at Virginia Wesleyan are very fortunate to have this amazing resource of Career 15 at their disposal,” said Green.  “The program allows smaller, private colleges to get the attention of bigger corporations.  I really feel that Career 15 has allowed me to have a career as opposed to just a job.” Students can register for Career 15 Sept. 8 – 18 at the Career Services booth in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

In January 2008, the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) launched the career-development program.  A unique resource, Career 15 connects students and graduates of 15 private Virginia colleges with top-tier corporations looking for employees and interns.  What started just a year ago with the participation of 17 companies has now grown to more than 70.

Director of Career Services Lisa Fentress describes Career 15 as “a 60 second networking link” for students.  It’s an excellent resource for students, and is also available to alumni, seeking full-or-part-time employment, summer jobs and internships, she said.

Once registered, students can search for jobs, find out about upcoming recruiting events, upload a resume, review profiles of employers and read up on the latest career and interviewing tips. And one of the real perks of the program is that not only can employers contact students, but students can contact potential employers, said Fentress.

For Green, Career 15 was a crucial resource to post-graduation success and launching his career.

“It was through Career Services that I learned about Career 15 and what the program had to offer,” said Green.  “Career Services helped me register, prepare my resume and myself for the interview, and market myself to be the best candidate.”
