On April 28, faculty and staff gathered at DeFord Manor for one of the University’s annual traditions, the Employee Milestones Celebration. The event recognized retirees and employees marking significant years of service, honoring the dedication and contributions that continue to shape the institution.

President Scott D. Miller opened the celebration by welcoming attendees and reflecting on a year defined by progress and shared achievement. From the successful SACSCOC review to the continued integration of Sentara College of Health Sciences and the upcoming transition to Batten University on July 1, Miller emphasized that the University’s momentum is the result of collective effort.

“What makes this especially meaningful is how we arrived here: together,” he said, highlighting the collaboration and commitment that have propelled the institution forward.

Two retirees, whose impact has been felt across campus, were honored: Director of Safety and Security Vic Dorsey and General Manager of Sodexo Dining Services Tim Lockett. Though Dorsey was unable to attend, both were recognized for their leadership, professionalism, and the lasting relationships they built within the University community.

The recognition of employee service milestones followed. Provost and Vice President Deirdre Gonsalves-Jackson introduced the employee with the longest tenure at this year’s event — Anthony Daniels, a 30-year honoree, for his years of steadfast service and dedication.

Vice President for Finance John Groulx presented the 25-year honorees, Stu Minnis and Diana Risk, followed by Senior Vice President Keith Moore, who honored 20-year recipients Deirdre Gonsalves-Jackson, Lydia Kennedy, and Andrea Hoover-Erbig.

Chief of Staff and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives Kelly Cordova recognized 15-year honorees Thomas Brown, Kristin Burney, and Lisa Lyon Payne. Vice President for Enrollment and Student Success Heather Campbell concluded the recognitions with the 10-year honorees: Jordan Allen, Rachael Burgess ’23, Michele Hedspeth, Angie Murphy, Anja Serby-Wilkens, Jeff Toussaint, and Steve Watson.

In closing, President Miller expressed gratitude for the honorees and the broader University community.

“Your dedication, your professionalism, and your care for our students define who we are as a University,” he said. “As we continue this important period of growth and transformation, I am grateful for your leadership and partnership.”
