"Presidential Perspectives" Marks 10 Years
President Miller has served for a decade as executive editor of the internationally distributed higher education leadership series
News Release | July 19, 2016
For over a decade, Virginia Wesleyan College President Scott D. Miller and his long-time consulting and publishing colleague, Marylouise Fennell, Senior Counsel at the Council of Independent Colleges, have served as executive editors of "Presidential Perspectives," a popular internationally distributed higher education leadership series written by college presidents for college presidents.
The print version of the 2015-16 "Presidential Perspectives" series, titled "Innovative Concepts to Achieve Campus Transformation," was recently published by Philadelphia-based Aramark Higher Education and is the 10th anniversary edition.
Dr. Muriel Howard, President of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), and Dr. Richard Ekman, President of the Council of Independent Colleges, authored a special 10-year foreword.
Chapters in the series are authored by notable presidents whose institutions are in the forefront of innovative practices in these areas. One chapter was released each month during the academic year, distributed electronically, and posted on the Presidential Perspectives website. At the end of each series, the foreword and chapters are bound into a book and distributed to college and university presidents nationwide.
Among the chapters in the 2015-2016 series are “Convene, Cooperate, and Collaborate” by James T. Harris, President of University of San Diego; “Culture Trumps Strategy; Culture Defines Strategy” by Thomas L. Hellie, President of Linfield College; and “Campus Transformation through Physical Transformation” by James P. Clements, President of Clemson University.
Other college and university presidents contributing to this edition include Dennis Holtschneider of DePaul University, Gregory Dell'Omo of Rider University, Vistap Karbhari of University of Texas at Arlington, Jonathan Alger of James Madison University, Ken Starr of Baylor University, Angel Cabrera of George Mason University, and Jeffrey R. Docking of Adrian College.
“We’re incredibly proud that this series has become a rich resource over the last decade for examining the needs and practices of higher education institutions and the students and communities they serve,” says Dr. Miller. “As institutions face continuing challenges and public scrutiny, it is critical that their leaders come together to look for innovation and strategic solutions that will have a lasting impact on the value of higher education.”
Dr. Miller is in his second year as President of Virginia Wesleyan College. He is a former President of Bethany College (2007-15), Wesley College (1997-2007), and Lincoln Memorial University (1991-97). In addition to “Presidential Perspectives” Miller and Fennell have collaborated on 11 books and are regular columnists for “Enrollment Manager” and “College Planning and Management.” Dr. Miller is also a monthly higher education columnist for The Virginian-Pilot and The Huffington Post.
A highly-sought presenter, mentor and author on higher educational topics such as financial sustainability and presidential performance, Dr. Miller was one of 22 presidents interviewed and profiled in a book on presidential leadership and transitions in Jerold Panas’ book, "The First 120 Days: What a New College President Must Do to Succeed." Dr. Miller has also been featured in several books in recent years, including ”The Entrepreneurial College President”; “The Small College Guide to Financial Health”; “Born, Not Made: The Entrepreneurial Personality” and "#Follow the Leader: Lessons in Social Media Success from #HigherEd CEOs." For 15 years Dr. Miller chaired the Council of Independent Colleges New Presidents Program.
