Traditional Fall Enrollment Reaches Capacity, Reflecting University's Commitment to Diverse Learning Pathways

In a testament to visionary leadership and effective enrollment management strategies, Virginia Wesleyan University has experienced a remarkable journey from a local college to an international university, solidifying its position as a higher education trailblazer, according to the article, "Virginia Wesleyan University Soars to New Heights: A Record-Breaking Trajectory." Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, VWU emerged stronger than ever, experiencing a surge in its traditional program recruiting cycle this fall, according to the report. Heather Campbell, Vice President for Enrollment, said that inquiries increased by 32 percent, applications by 54 percent, acceptances by 35 percent, and new student enrollments by 28 percent, all while maintaining a robust 71 percent acceptance rate.
"With this year's new student intake being the largest since the university gained its status in 2017," said Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the University. "This upward trend not only bodes well for the institution but also for the entire region."
The article elaborates on information provided by President Miller in his ninth annual State of the University Address last month.
Campbell noted that in the traditional College of Arts & Sciences, the university welcomed over 1,600 undergraduate students in 2022-23. The university's dedication to diverse educational pathways was further evident as the total enrollment soared beyond 4,500, including non-traditional students from VWU Global Campus, graduate programs, Tokyo campus, and non-credit programs.
"The College of Arts and Sciences is experiencing unprecedented growth, with Fall Semester enrollment reaching 'overflow' status for the sixth consecutive year," revealed President Miller. To accommodate this demand, additional housing has been arranged at Northampton Crossing and Coastal 61.
Dr. Miller emphasized the university's ongoing commitment to diversity, stating, "Our student body is now larger and more diverse than ever before. Over the past decade, Virginia Wesleyan's role in Virginia's education landscape has transformed, driven by a commitment to diverse learners across educational pathways."
The esteemed Batten Honors College, recognized as one of only 147 honors colleges nationwide, remains a cornerstone of the university's identity. With 160 scholars in its ranks, the Batten Honors College has expanded to include a graduate component, enriching the academic experience further.
"Our purpose extends to lifelong learning, transcending disciplines and time zones, preparing students for careers, and contributing as employers, leaders, and stewards. Our impact reaches beyond academics, providing social, emotional, and communal growth, helping students find their place," noted President Miller.
The VWU Global Campus encompasses a range of programs, including early enrollment, evening and weekend options, VWU online, graduate programs, the collaborative campus in Japan, and a highly sought-after continuing education program.
In light of ongoing discussions about the future of higher education nationwide, President Miller added, VWU's ability to adapt to evolving student demographics and needs sets a promising precedent. Despite challenges faced by private institutions in the region due to enrollment declines, Virginia Wesleyan's trajectory remains positive.
