Student-led Marlin Business Conference Concludes with Social at DeFord Manor

The Virginia Wesleyan University Marlin Business Conference concluded Thursday evening with a reception at DeFord Manor, the president's residence. This year's theme, "Creating Opportunities through Technical Innovation," emphasized the importance of technology in modern business. The event was organized by students of Professor Frank Futyma’s MBE 301 class and led by Emily Moody, the student CEO.               

Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of VWU, provided the capstone remarks at the closing reception. He emphasized the importance of gratitude in business dealings and the nurturing of professional relationships. He also highlighted the unique opportunities offered by VWU, such as the Marlin Business Conference, which allow students to develop management skills and practical experience.

Dr. Miller's remarks focused on the importance of building meaningful relationships in the business world and leveraging the liberal arts education at VWU to create and nurture these connections. He commended the students for their hard work and ability to juggle priorities, generate big ideas, and work effectively in teams.

The Marlin Business Conference is not just a learning platform but also a springboard for future leaders and innovators. It provides students with hands-on experience in organizing and executing a major event, offering them a rare chance to emerge as polished professionals. The conference's focus on technology and innovation mirrors the evolving landscape of business, making it a vital event for aspiring business leaders in the coastal Virginia region.

The conference's successful conclusion marks another milestone in VWU's efforts to prepare its students for the challenges and opportunities of the modern business world. 

Dr. Miller thanked the student team for their outstanding work and representation of the University. He also presented gifts of appreciation to Moody, and Joslyn Woodard, student Chief of Staff. He also thanked Professor Frank Futyma for his vital guidance for the students.

Students enjoyed relaxing music from a Spirio Steinway piano at the culminating catered event in the DeFord Manor East Room and in the adjoining Virginia Oveda Williams DeFord Garden, Terrance and Pool.
