Virginia Wesleyan College is a thriving place for arts lovers. Here’s a look at the visual and performing arts events planned for the spring 2016 semester.
Virginia Wesleyan College Concert Series
The Virginia Wesleyan College Concert Series continues with Cantus (February 4), a men’s vocal ensemble acknowledged around the world for their charismatic personality, artistic excellence and versatility. Additional performances include Simeon Kim, Piano (March 14), Padmarani Rasiah Cantu, Indian Dance (March 31), The Robert Jospé Express (April 1), and Trio 826 (April 15). Student Music Performances
As part of a 50-state consortium of choirs, the Wesleyan Chorale and Wesleyan Singers will premier "Winter Cycle" by 21st-century composer Timothy Takach in this year's Presidential Masterworks Series (February 28). Soprano Billye Brown Youmans, a member of VWC's Performing Artist Faculty, will also perform. Performance will take place at 4 p.m. at Bayside Presbyterian Church (1400 Ewell Rd., Virginia Beach). Donations will be accepted. Other events include A Night on 52nd Street (February 12) and Journeyin' On (April 18). More
Theatre
For its spring production, the Virginia Wesleyan College Theatre Department will hit the stage with "Urinetown" by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann (March 2-6). In a Gotham-like city, a 20-year drought has caused a terrible water shortage, making private toilets unthinkable in this satirical comedy musical. Directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Travis Malone. Performances take place in Hofheimer Theater. Public ticket prices range from $10-15; free to the VWC community with ID. Center for Sacred Music
The 2015-2016 Sound & Symbol Lecture Series is titled “Sing Me to Heaven.” VWC faculty and special guests will join Center for Sacred Music director Sandra Billy in an exploration of music and belief in the world’s major religions surrounding death and what comes after, as well as cultural components that form an intrinsic part of our experiences with end-of-life matters. All performances take place in Fine Arts 9 at 11 a.m. The Monumental Moments series continues with From Dust You Have Come (February 10), an Ash Wednesday service of scripture readings, music, reflection and the imposition of ashes. Neil Britton Art Gallery
The semester will open with "Amplifications and Measures" by Mariam Eqbal (February 12- April 8). Eqbal's progressive and experimental works of video/animation, drawings and prints explore the fundamentals of change through repetition, branching into time and motion. Sponsored by the Virginia Wesleyan Art Department in partnership with Popblossom, a curator and artist collaborative founded by former gallery owners Lorrie Saunders and Brad Hall. An opening reception and artist lecture will take place Friday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Neil Britton Gallery. Later in the semester, a Senior Art Exhibition (Dates TBD) will showcase the artwork of graduating students. Barclay Sheaks Gallery
This permanent display of works by Barclay Sheaks, the late Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at Virginia Wesleyan, is an expression of the value of liberal and lifelong learning. Admission to the Barclay Sheaks Gallery, located inside Godwin Hall, is free and open to the public. More/Gallery Hours
