Virginia Wesleyan announces new leadership in Adult Studies Program

Tom Farley brings more than 30 years of teaching, advising and program development experience to the position.

altNorfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – The Office of Academic Affairs at Virginia Wesleyan College announced that Tom Farley has accepted the position of Director of the Adult Studies Program (ASP), effective July 1.

Farley currently handles a variety of duties within the Adult Studies Program including coordinating the K-12 program development, the ACT (Alternative Certification for Teachers) program and the National Board Certification Support Program. He has been an adjunct teacher at Virginia Wesleyan for more than 20 years, teaching courses in geography and education.

"Tom Farley brings to this position a wealth of experience and knowledge and, to those who know him, a wellspring of respect and good will," said Vice President for Academic Affairs and Kenneth R. Perry Dean of the College Dr. Timothy O'Rourke.

A lifelong resident of the Hampton Roads area, Farley retired from the Chesapeake Public School System in 2004 after 30 years of teaching. He was formerly chair of the social studies department at Hickory High School and was awarded Teacher of the Year in 1982. He received his master's degree in higher education from Old Dominion University and his bachelor's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

In the 1990s, Farley co-designed and co-created the EasyIEP Special Education Internet Database software program, the Student Assistant for U.S. History software program and the Laser Director software program.

"I appreciate the faith and trust given to me by the College and my staff," said Farley. "I look forward to engaging with the Virginia Wesleyan community and maintaining existing Adult Studies Program and developing new ones."

Outside of teaching, Farley has performed locally as an acoustic and band musician for over 25 years, and has five original CDs to his credit, which are available on iTunes.

Farley replaces Dr. Richard Hoehlein, who retired June 30.
