VWU's eSports Program Fosters Skills Beyond Gaming with New Valorant Team

University News | November 13, 2023

Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU) is excited to announce the latest expansion of its co-ed club eSports program: the addition of Valorant, a 5v5 character-based tactical shooter. This move not only enhances the gaming options for VWU students but also aligns the university with the pulse of the global eSports movement, making it an even more attractive destination for prospective students.

Valorant, created by Riot Games, stands out with its unique blend of tactical play and character-based strategy. The game's inclusion in VWU's eSports program reflects the university's commitment to providing diverse and engaging gaming experiences. With 22 different agents to choose from and 13 playable maps, Valorant offers a rich and varied gameplay that encourages strategic thinking and teamwork.

The Marlin eSports Arena, located in the Jane P. Batten Student Center, is the hub of VWU's eSports activities. Boasting 17 high-end gaming PCs equipped with the latest technology, the arena provides an ideal environment for both training and competition. Guiding the players is Program Director and Coach Glenn Johnson, a veteran in the field with a keen understanding of the eSports landscape.

"We're thrilled to introduce Valorant to our eSports program. It's not just about the game; it's about preparing our students for the future. Valorant's emphasis on strategy, teamwork, and communication mirrors the skills necessary in today's professional world. Our aim is to provide an environment where students can grow both as players and as future professionals," says Coach Johnson.

At VWU, eSports is more than just playing games; it's about opening doors to myriad career opportunities. The eSports industry, now a billion-dollar global sport, offers careers in marketing, media and communication, business management, coaching, and much more. VWU's program, therefore, is not just about nurturing top gamers but also about developing well-rounded individuals with a broad skill set.

Valorant is renowned for being the most gender-diverse game in eSports, with 30% to 40% of its players being female. This aligns with VWU's ethos of inclusivity and diversity, ensuring that all students, regardless of gender, have the opportunity to participate and excel. Participation in Valorant at VWU also means competing in leagues like ECAC and NACE, offering students the chance to test their skills against some of the best collegiate players. This competitive aspect is crucial in fostering a spirit of excellence and continuous improvement.

For both existing and prospective students looking to combine their passion for gaming with a robust academic and professional development, VWU’s eSports program, now featuring Valorant, is an ideal choice. The university's commitment to providing top-notch facilities, expert coaching, and a pathway to diverse career opportunities makes it a leader in the collegiate eSports arena.

Wesleyan University is excited to welcome new players to its expanding eSports program. With the addition of Valorant, the university continues to position itself at the forefront of collegiate eSports, offering an experience that is both academically enriching and professionally rewarding. "Join us at VWU," invites Coach Johnson, "where your passion for gaming can lead to a world of possibilities, both in and out of the gaming arena."
