VWU Named One of Hampton Roads’ 50 Most Community-Minded Organizations
VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads honors leaders in civic engagement and service
University News | December 3, 2025
Virginia Wesleyan University has been recognized among The Civic 50 Hampton Roads, a prestigious list honoring the region’s most community-minded organizations. The award, presented by VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads in partnership with Points of Light—the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service—highlights institutions that demonstrate outstanding commitment to social impact, civic engagement, and community partnership.
Selection for The Civic 50 is determined through a rigorous, independently administered survey by True Impact, a company that specializes in measuring and maximizing the social and business value of community initiatives. The Hampton Roads program is modeled after Points of Light’s national recognition, setting the gold standard for corporate citizenship and showcasing how organizations effectively use their time, talent and resources for the greater good.
At Virginia Wesleyan, civic engagement is woven into the fabric of campus life. Through Wesleyan Engaged, faculty, staff and students work year-round to support community needs across Coastal Virginia. Director of Civic Engagement and Service Learning Arin Shatto leads the University’s broad network of outreach and volunteer partnerships, connecting students with meaningful service opportunities that contribute to real change.
“Our community partnerships reflect the heart of who we are as a University,” said Shatto. “Our students learn best by doing—whether they are tending to the community garden at Good Samaritan Episcopal Church, hosting American Red Cross blood drives, or supporting local nonprofits throughout the region. Service is an integral part of the Wesleyan experience.”
Virginia Wesleyan’s longstanding service-learning collaborations demonstrate the institution’s belief in hands-on impact and responsible citizenship. From environmental stewardship to health initiatives and educational support, VWU continues to create opportunities that strengthen the community while preparing students to lead with compassion and purpose.
The Civic 50 Hampton Roads initiative not only elevates organizations already making a difference, but also provides a roadmap for others looking to deepen their influence. By identifying best practices and offering valuable benchmarking data, VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads encourages companies to transform good intentions into sustainable action.
