VWU Softball and Baseball Teams Knock It Out of the Park

Players lend support to raise money for veterans' charities

University News | November 21, 2023

Members of Virginia Wesleyan University’s softball and baseball teams recently joined forces to help D-BAT Virginia Beach raise money for two veteran charities. An indoor baseball and softball training center, D-BAT held a Hit-a-Thon to support the Word of Honor Fund and Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic.

“They floored me so much with their enthusiasm!” says Craig Colucci, owner of D-BAT Virginia Beach. “We are so thankful for their outstanding support! VWU’s players had a HUGE impact and really set the tone for the hustle and work it took for us to hit 29,603 balls over eight hours, crushing our goal of 18,600. Because of their tremendous help, we were also able to raise more than $20,000 for the two veterans' charities!”

These two athletic teams represent the kind spirit that fills the VWU campus. At Virginia Wesleyan University, we understand the power of action and community. Volunteering offers more than just an opportunity to help others; it's a chance for our students to grow and develop life skills, from teamwork and problem-solving to effective communication and leadership. Volunteering is a gateway to personal enrichment and global change.

“We love when our student-athletes get out in the community and build positive relationships,” says Andrea Hoover-Erbig, executive director for intercollegiate athletics. “We are proud of all that our student-athletes accomplish in the classrooms, in their competitive spaces, and in our greater community. They do an outstanding job of representing Marlin Athletics and Virginia Wesleyan University.”
