VWU Softball to Host 16th Annual Strike Out Cancer

Pitch in to support the Marlins in their fight against cancer on April 11, beginning at noon

University News | April 7, 2026

Virginia Wesleyan University’s softball team will take the field for a cause on Saturday, April 11, hosting the 16th Annual Strike Out Cancer event at Broyles Field in TowneBank Park. The start of a day filled with community spirit begins at noon as the Marlins take on the Cougars of Averett University. Admission is $5, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Brandon Elliott, the Marlins have raised more than $300,000 for the organization over the years, including a record-breaking $94,000 in 2025 alone. The 2026 event promises to build on that success, offering something for all ages, with music, food, bounce houses, face painting, balloon animals, and a large silent auction. Auction items include sports camp registrations, restaurant gift certificates, New England Patriots tickets, and more—offering attendees plenty of ways to support the cause while enjoying the day.

This year’s event holds special significance for the Marlins family. The team will honor longtime assistant coach Jenna Wilson, affectionately known as “JDub,” who is courageously battling cancer for the second time. Now more than 60 days post stem cell transplant, Wilson is on the road to recovery—and the Marlins are proud to welcome her back to the dugout. In a moment sure to inspire all in attendance, she will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Blending competition with compassion, Strike Out Cancer Day continues to showcase the power of community, resilience, and hope—one pitch at a time.
