altNorfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College President Billy Greer has been appointed Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) for 2010-2011.

Greer, who became president of Virginia Wesleyan in 1992, received his Ph.D. from Georgia State University, his Th.D. from Emory University, his M.Div. from Drew University and his B.S. from Valdosta State College.

“NAICU is the single most important voice for independent colleges and universities and I am honored to be elected to the Board,” said Greer.  “Virginia Wesleyan’s affiliation with NAICU greatly benefits our College because of their important work on policy issues with the federal government.”

NAICU is the leading national association representing private higher education, serving as the unified voice of more than 1,000 independent college and university presidents, and specialized, state, and regional association executives.  NAICU member institutions enroll nine out of every 10 students attending a private college or university in the United States.

Members of NAICU’s board of directors set the association’s agenda on federal higher education policy; actively encourage support of NAICU priorities and initiatives; and oversee the association’s financial administration. Members serve three-year terms.

“NAICU's new board members and officers were selected by their peers because of their expertise in the field, proven leadership, and commitment to America's college students," said NAICU President David L. Warren. “They assume their responsibilities at a time of great challenge and transformation for American higher education.”

  • Dr. John E. Bassett, president of Clark University in Worcester, Mass., chair
  • Daniel J. Carey, president of Edgewood College in Madison, Wis., vice chair
  • Larry L. Earvin, president of Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, secretary
