Greer Environmental Sciences Center Receives Virginia Beach Beautification Commission Award

The University is proud to receive the 2026 Institutional Landscape Award in recognition of our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable outdoor spaces.

University News | April 16, 2026

The Greer Environmental Sciences Center has been recognized with the 2026 Institutional Landscape Award by the Virginia Beach Beautification Commission (VBBC) as part of its Annual Landscape Awards Program.

Each year, the commission evaluates properties within a different Virginia Beach voting district based on their “curb appeal” and environmental contributions. This year, District 4 properties were considered, and the Greer Environmental Sciences Center was selected for its commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and the creation of an inviting outdoor space for students and visitors. Virginia Beach City Council member Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond presented the award during the commission's annual awards luncheon on May 21 at Princess Anne Country Club.

Founded in 1965, the Virginia Beach Beautification Commission is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to promoting greener, more attractive, and sustainable spaces throughout the city. Guided by its motto, "Beauty is Good Business," the commission works with community partners to enhance Virginia Beach through landscaping, streetscape improvements, environmental initiatives, and preservation efforts.

The Greer Environmental Sciences Center provides hands-on learning and research opportunities for students and reflects the University's commitment to sustainability, experiential learning, and community engagement.

Congratulations to Professor Elizabeth Malcolm and the Environmental Science Department on this recognition!
