Members of the campus community gathered in the Kaufman Center for Enrollment for a special presentation from Sentara Cares on April 6. Sentara Cares works to strengthen communities by focusing on advancing health equity and ensuring that all members of the community have access to the resources they need to live their healthiest and most fulfilling lives. During the event, a check for $100,000 was presented to Virginia Wesleyan’s scholarship fund.

Sentara is currently VWU’s on-campus partner for student health and sports medicine. In addition, the University offers a joint Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Sentara College of Health Sciences, enabling Marlins to engage in careers in medicine and patient care with a degree that is rooted in the liberal arts and sciences.

VWU President Scott D. Miller opened the ceremony, expressing gratitude to Sentara for its partnership with the University.

“Thank you to Sentara, who has been caring for and supporting our students in a variety of ways for many years now,” said President Miller. “Sentara has been a valuable partner and incredible resource for us, and with this new initiative, Sentara Cares is supporting our students with a wonderful gift to our scholarship fund.”

Many of the student recipients of the new Sentara Cares scholarship were present for the special event. Abigail Marfo, Amia Barnes, Anozaire Briddge Orius, David Vanterpool, Jeanelle Mayberry and Madelyn Foca are enrolled in programs related to healthcare—from nursing to social work—at VWU. In addition to the students and key members of the VWU staff, Sentara’s Executive Director of Community Engagement & Impact Sherry Norquist, Project Coordinator for Community Engagement & Impact Amanda Simpson, and Community Relations Coordinator Alex Askew were also on hand for the ceremony.

“We are grateful that Sentara recognizes the holistic needs of our students,” President Miller noted. “They have been a generous partner to our students in so many aspects of their collegiate experience. What a great day to be a Marlin!”

Following the check presentation, VWU student ambassador Risa Yanagita accompanied our partners from Sentara for a tour of the campus.
