Choosing a Major

The Lighthouse can help you to explore majors. If you are deciding on a major or considering changing your current one, we can help. Schedule an appointment with our director of the Career Development Program, Alice Jones, through The Lighthouse’s appointment scheduler.

Tips & Resources to help with choosing a major

  1. Take Virginia Wesleyan's interactive personal interest survey, FOCUS-2. This online program helps students to discover their interests and select majors that suit each student's interests and personal goals. To access FOCUS-2 and obtain an access code, contact Career Development in the Lighthouse at careerdevelopment@vwu.edu.
  2. Use What can I do with this major?  a useful tool to help you explore majors and related careers. Use it to learn about typical career areas and types of employers that hire people with each major, as well as strategies to make you a more marketable candidate
  3. Attend a "Choosing Your Major" workshop or the “Majors & Minors” Fair.
  4. Take courses that interest you.
  5. Talk to professors in potential career fields about career possibilities.
  6. Talk to professionals in potential career fields about career possibilities.
  7. Research career fields. View videos on careers, skills and , industries to brainstorm careers.
  8. Use O*NET OnLine for career exploration and job analysis.
