Virginia Teacher Licensure Requirements

The Virginia Wesleyan University Teacher Preparation programs are accredited through a process approved by the Virginia Board of Education (VBOE).

The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, specifically 34 CFR 668.43 (a) (5) (v) and 34 CFR 668.43 (c) require disclosures by institutions regarding educational requirements for programs leading to professional licensure or certification regardless of modality. Students who are interested in teaching in states other than Virginia are encouraged to contact the Teacher Education Office to explore and identify the qualifications required for respective states other than Virginia. We can provide the information students will need to have when applying to other states with a Virginia Teaching license. We encourage students to contact us prior to attending Virginia Wesleyan University so that they know how well our program will meet their employment plans.

Assessment Requirements for Virginia Licensure

All teacher candidates in our three initial licensure programs – Elementary PK-6, Special Education: General Curriculum K-12 and M.A.Ed. program must achieve passing scores on the professional teacher assessments required by the Virginia Board of Education. For more information on the assessment requirements for Virginia licensure, please refer to the VDOE website and the Praxis Licensure Requirements in Virginia.

Students must request that official test score reports be sent directly to Virginia Wesleyan University. All required assessment scores should be obtained by October 15 if student teaching the following spring, or March 15 if student teaching in the following fall.

Candidates are responsible for scheduling all exams through the designated testing sites.
