The Lighthouse is pleased to accept applications for its Summer High-Impact Practice Program or SHIPP for summer 2018.
SHIPP is a competitive program that offers grants and academic support to Virginia Wesleyan students to undertake credit-bearing internship, research, or study away experiences during the summer.
SHIPP Benefits:
- Tuition at $150/credit hour for SHIPP courses
- Internship grants up to $1,000
- Research grants up to $1,000
- Study away grants up to $2,500
- Individualized faculty mentoring
Applications for Summer 2018 SHIPP will be accepted on a rotating basis.
First priority deadline: November 1, 2017
Second priority deadline: February 15, 2018
Final deadline: April 2, 2018

SHIPP Summer 2017
In summer 2017, Virginia Wesleyan sponsored a pilot SHIPP for study away and undergraduate research. The following students were awarded SHIPP grants for their independent projects:
- Amanda Albert ‘18 (Biology). “Expression of AGPs During Spermatogenesis in the Model Moss Physcomitrella Patens.” Research Mentor: Prof. Eric Johnson.
- Destini Garrison ‘18 (Biology). “AGP Expression during Spermatogenesis in the Model moss Physcomitrella.” Ms. Garrison also received a Summer Undergraduate Research Science Fellowship from the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges for her project. Research Mentor: Prof. Eric Johnson.
- Abigail Horgan ‘19 (Psychology). “The Examination of Eyewitness Accounts on Sexual Assault.” Research Mentor: Prof. Taryn Myers.
- Caleb Mercer ‘19 (History and Religious Studies). “Complications with Interpreting Scripture: The Bible, Romans 1, and Human Sexuality.” Research Mentor: Prof. Craig Wansink.
- Kellen Phillips ‘18 (Biology). Study Abroad Internship at the Radwick Equine Centre in Sydney, Australia. Ms. Phillips also received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and an Experiential Learning Scholarship from the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges for her project.
- Kristin Rempas ‘18 (International Studies). Study Abroad at the American College in Athens, Greece. Ms. Rempas also received an Experiential Learning Scholarship from the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges for her project.
- Tremain Torre ‘19 (International Studies). Study Abroad at Oriel College at the University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom.
