Criteria for VWU Athletic Hall of Fame

Mission

The Marlins Athletic Hall of Fame of Batten University was established by the Board of Trustees in 2007 to honor those who have made lasting contributions to the University’s intercollegiate athletic program through outstanding achievement in athletics, service to athletics, or other significant contributions to athletics. In 2015, eligibility was expanded to include four categories: individual achievement, teams of distinction, benefactors, and coaches/staff. 

Eligibility includes five categories: Individuals, Veterans, Teams, Coaches/Administrators and Benefactors.

Induction Criteria

Individual

  • Any individual of good character who has demonstrated outstanding performance in athletic competition at Batten University, Virginia Wesleyan University, or Virginia Wesleyan College shall be eligible for nomination in this category 5-15 years after the graduation of his or her class.
    Example: A student-athlete who graduated in 2020 would be eligible in this category from 2025 through 2035.
  • Persons who have not qualified for a degree from Batten University, Virginia Wesleyan University, or Virginia Wesleyan College but left the University in good standing may be nominated.
    Good standing is defined as a 2.0 GPA and not separated for disciplinary reasons.
  • Nominees may also include alumni with postgraduate athletic achievements and other individuals such as coaches and staff who have made outstanding contributions to Marlins intercollegiate athletics.
  • Posthumous nominations are invited.

Veteran (Individual)

  • Be at least ten (10) years past their initial eligibility for Hall of Fame induction.
    Example: A student-athlete who graduated in 2020 would be eligible for standard Hall of Fame consideration from 2025 through 2035. Beginning in 2036, they would only be eligible for induction through the Veteran Committee's nomination.
  • Posthumous nominations are invited.

Team of Distinction

  • A team that has earned national recognition. Eligible for nomination five years after the competition season.

Coaches/Administrators

  • Individuals, coaches, and administrators who have enhanced the University's intercollegiate athletics. Coaches must have served the University for a minimum of 10 years.
  • Posthumous nominations are invited.

Benefactor

  • Philanthropists who have left their mark on Marlins Athletics.
  • Posthumous nominations are invited.

Candidate Nominations

  • Nominations shall be submitted to the Office of Alumni Engagement.
  • Only nominations received between July 1-January 31 each year will be eligible for consideration. Nominations may be carried over for an additional year.

Place and Time of Inductions

  • Induction of members is held annually, typically in October at Homecoming and Family Weekend.

Inductee Recognition

  • Names of inductees, along with information about their contributions to intercollegiate athletics at the University, shall be permanently displayed in the Marlins Athletic Hall of Fame installation in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
  • Inductees will also be profiled on the University website.
